KU Engineering Students Win First Prize in “The Comprehensive Course in Japanese Business Innovation” Competition

The Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, extends its congratulations to the student team GentleEase—a collaboration between students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture—on winning first prize in The Comprehensive Course in Japanese Business Innovation. The competition was held on Friday, July 4, 2025, at the Ballroom, 7th Floor, The Landmark Bangkok Hotel, and was organized by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Bangkok (JCC). The award was presented by Mr. Koichiro Yui, Vice Chairman of the Education Section, Social Contribution Committee.

The competition featured six student teams (two teams per university) from three institutions: Kasetsart University, Chulalongkorn University, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.

Team GentleEase from Kasetsart University won first prize with their innovative project titled “Oral Healthcare Innovation”, which addresses the needs of bedridden elderly individuals who face difficulties in rinsing, opening their mouths, or swallowing. The innovation enables caregivers to more easily and effectively maintain oral hygiene for elderly patients, improving quality of life for the elderly, caregivers, and families. The solution transforms oral care from a stressful task into a quick, simple, and effective routine that ensures cleanliness and safety without compromising on hygiene standards.

The team was awarded a trophy, 50,000 THB in cash, a study visit to Japan, and a certificate of achievement.

Kasetsart University’s second team, Never too old, presented an innovative project titled “HearingSense Smart Glasses”, inspired by the challenges faced by elderly individuals with hearing loss. Their smart glasses utilize AI to generate real-time subtitles and visualize ambient sounds, enhancing communication, safety, and independence. The technology integrates AR, AI speech-to-text, and spatial audio recognition to provide intuitive, real-time conversation subtitles, display sound direction and proximity using dynamic text sizes and positions, and alert users to potential dangers (e.g., sirens or approaching vehicles) by changing lens colors. The customizable AI system allows users to tailor sound notifications for better social engagement and daily confidence.

Team Never too old received a certificate of achievement for their efforts.

Advisors for both teams included: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Komsan Hongesombut and Dr. Noppada Teera-Achariyakul (Department of Electrical Engineering), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jittat Fakcharoenphol(Department of Computer Engineering), Asst. Prof. Dr. Aracha KRASAE-IN (Integrated Product Design Innovation) and Mr. Wirithiphol Phonak (Department of Architecture)

Congratulations to both teams for their creativity, dedication, and contribution to innovation that enhances the lives of the aging population.
