Faculty of Engineering Advances Hybrid MFC Technology for Industrial Wastewater Treatment

The Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, reports progress in the High-Performance Hybrid Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) project following a technical workshop held on 13 January 2025. The workshop was organized as part of an ongoing research initiative aimed at scaling up MFC technology for sustainable industrial wastewater treatment.

The workshop focused on the scale-up of Hybrid MFC systems for the treatment of cutting fluid wastewater generated from industrial machining processes. Technical discussions addressed key challenges related to system design, performance optimization, and the transition from laboratory-scale research to pilot- and industrial-scale implementation. This work supports the application of environmental biotechnology to improve efficiency and sustainability in the manufacturing sector.

Outcomes from the workshop are being applied to the next phase of the project, which involves translating research results into a scalable technology platform. In parallel, the research team is preparing for the establishment of a deep-tech startup to deliver practical wastewater treatment solutions for industrial users, with a development roadmap extending toward 2026.

The Faculty of Engineering acknowledges the contributions of invited experts who participated in the workshop:

  • Prof. John McBride, University of Southampton
  • Prof. Yan, Taicaan Technology

Their technical expertise and strategic insights have contributed to both the technological scale-up approach and the preliminary commercialization strategy of the project.

This initiative reflects the Faculty’s commitment to advancing research-based innovation and fostering the transfer of academic research into practical and sustainable industrial applications.
